Caddis Lodge is a beautifully renovated 1940s, three-bedroom self-contained cottage, thoughtfully designed for those who love the great outdoors but appreciate a touch of luxury. Caddis Lodge is a beautifully renovated 1940s cottage, just a fly cast away from the world-renowned Tongariro River and on the doorstep of the spectacular Tongariro National Park and Whakapapa ski fields. Blending the charm of its heritage with modern comforts, it’s an ideal retreat for outdoor enthusiasts who appreciate a little luxury at the end of an adventurous day.
Kitchen
As you step inside, you’ll find the spacious, well-equipped kitchen to your right, with everything you need for an easy, self-catered stay, including a fridge-freezer, oven with hob, and dishwasher. At its heart sits a beautiful French farmhouse table—the perfect place to gather with family and friends, share a meal and enjoy time together after a day exploring, and recount the day’s adventures.
Living Room
Designed with relaxation in mind, the living room features generously sized, comfortable sofas where you can unwind after a day spent on the river or exploring further afield. If you want to enjoy a movie, catch up online, or simply settle in with a good book, you’ll find a TV and Wi-Fi ready for when you need them. A heat pump (air conditioner) ensures you’ll be comfortable whatever the weather.
Bedrooms
Caddis Lodge offers three inviting bedrooms, with two featuring new queen-sized beds and the third a new double. All are dressed in luxurious linens and soft, cosy blankets so you can settle in for a restful night’s sleep. Each bedroom is thoughtfully furnished with bedside tables and lamps, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere in which to recharge for the day ahead.
Bathroom
The modern bathroom features a spacious walk-in shower, toilet, vanity and mirror. We’ve taken care of the essentials by providing plush white Sheridan towels, hand soap, shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. This means there’s less to pack and more room for an extra fly box or two — or your favourite cosy jumper!
Laundry & Drying Room
While laundry might not be the highlight of a getaway, it’s sometimes a necessity. The separate laundry, equipped with a washing machine and tub, makes it easy to freshen up your clothes during your stay. A real bonus for outdoor enthusiasts is the dedicated drying room, complete with boot rack and hanging rail. It’s the perfect place to hang wet waders, dry off soaked hiking boots and air out outdoor gear after a day of adventure — keeping everything organised, dry and ready for your next outing.
Morning Coffee & Afternoon Sunshine
Enjoy the best of the outdoors without leaving the cottage. At the back, a charming French-style table and chairs provide a lovely setting for a leisurely breakfast or morning coffee.
The front verandah is made for slower afternoons. Settle into our classic Surabaya kubu rattan chairs, soak up the sunshine, enjoy a glass of wine or a cuppa, or lose yourself in a good book. Alternatively, sit back and listen to the birdsong as you unwind and take in the peaceful surrounds.

About the hosts
A passionate angler, Lars learnt the art of fly fishing in Sweden before first visiting Tūrangi in 1993.
He has returned every year since. Alongside his partner, Jane, he later moved to New Zealand for a year to manage a boutique backpackers, a venture that only deepened his love for the Tongariro River and its surrounds. During this time, he also worked at Sporting Life, sharing his extensive knowledge and experience with fellow fishing enthusiasts.
Trained as a chef, Lars takes particular pleasure in cooking his catch, especially when entertaining friends. His background as a yoga teacher also comes in handy when navigating the more challenging stretches of river, where fitness and agility are essential.
For Jane, the defining moment came on a walk along the river track to Kāmahi Pool.
The undulating landscape, with the distant Kaimanawa Mountains beyond, awakened a deep affection for the area.
A keen amateur photographer, she has developed an eye for small details that might otherwise go unnoticed: the exquisite feathers of the tauhou (silvereye), the intricate construction of a nest, and unexpected juxtapositions that the river invites.
